I think it's excellent. Power is decent, but when you rev the 2l engine it's magnificent. (I beat a Civic TypeR along a slip road a few weeks back!)
Build quality could be better, but for the price I can't really complain. Stronger boot supports would be very welcome! (Yes, it's a Mazda6!!)
Practicality is fantastic - the back seats collapse at the touch of a button.
Many friends have commented to me how good a car it is when I've given them a lift in it, and it's extremely comfortable too - why bother with BMWs, Mercedes, etc? (BTW, I prefer my 6 to my friend's 08 plate Merc E220 - no room at all in there when you're 6'4"!!)

She's solid when motorway driving - not buffeted by the wind - but is very responsive to the accelerator. you have to driver her I.e. use the gears on "a" roads which I believe is the same for all diesel cars which is another reason why I thoroughly enjoy driving her. she's very comfortable to drive and arrive at destination refreshed. I realize that I would get more miles per gallon but, at present, I do more town driving that motorway. I get more miles per gallon on a motorway run.

Good looking car, lots of room, very practical and good performance-BUT the worst experience I have ever had with a car or Manufacturer. Loads of rust affecting car- most hanging panels and loads underneath. Car went in to Mazda body shop to change bonnet, rear doors and tailgate. The car went in in August and I still havn't got in back- 5 MONTHS IN THE BODY SHOP!!!!! Is this a record? Mazda are thouroughly dishonest.

I had high hopes for the Mazda 6; my previous car was a Mazda 626 (nothing to be proud of) but I thought it was excellent. Fair enough it lurched around bends like a barge, and this was exacerbated by the least supportive seats I'd ever encountered but the 2.0 engine was potent and flexible and it could return 37mpg normally and 42mpg on the motorway, it never missed a beat in the six years I owned it. As a result I pretty much ignored every other make and model and made a bee line for the 6 which had been winning accolades by the dozen and was said to be a world apart from the 626. I admit I rushed into the purchase a little as the model I found was the Katano special edition and I liked the idea of something a little rarer than the regular 6. My first concern was with the dealer, they were messing up the finance even though I was financing through the bank; then I had an issue with one of the roof-rack runner caps being missing which they promised to replace but still hadn't when I picked the car up and then they wouldn't return my calls afterwards.
They couldn't explain why there was no sat-nav, which should have been standard on the Katano model, in fact they didn't know much about a 6's specifications at all for a Mazda dealer! Some front fogs as standard would have been nice too.
The car - I'd expected the 6 to be a couple of mpg better than the 626 being as it was 9 years younger and with a 6 speed box over a 5 speed.
Unfortunately it is about 3 mpg down, returning around 35mpg and strangely even on a long motorway run I've only managed to eke out 38mpg and it bottomed out at 31 mpg when I gave it a leathering.
The 6 is heavier than the 626 with airbags up the wazoo but I think it's the hideous rolling resistance that's largely to blame. Even down hill in neutral the car won't pick up speed and it feels like the handbrake is stuck on sometimes. The rolling resistance also doesn't help with the gear changes which are jerky through a sharp bite on the clutch and the car decelerating the moment you clutch in; you need to be very quick on the change to get anything near a smooth change. Hopefully when it comes to tyre change time I'll get some more eco-friendly tyres which will abate these problems; I can afford for the handling to suffer from less grippy tyres as the handling is far tighter than I (or my passengers) need.
After that though the engine is quite pokey and flexible, speed can drop as low as 25 without having to drop below 6th gear.
On other matters, the rear seat backs are a little too vertical for comfort and I have doubts about the durability of the seat material.
A big concern is the trip computer - firstly you can either use the computer OR see the clock, which is ludicrous, you always want the clock displaying. Second, the mpg shows up as litres per 100 miles or some other such nonsense, which is worthless. And thirdly the fuel remaining calculations are miles out.
The climate control can be annoying too; even with a 7 speed fan it doesn't always prioritise the airflow the way I'd like it.
Other niggles - minor I know - the light for the ignition key slot lights up the key and not the slot you want to insert it in, which is pointless.
After all this it sounds like I absolutely hate the car but I don't; it's been a disappointment in many ways but the engine is nice and flexible, it handles the bends brilliantly and the front seats are comfy even for a six footer, and very supportive in the bends. Also worth noting is the rear seat folding mechanism which is very handy, and the 6 looks good (much better than the new style 6) especially with the Katano's twin pipes, spoiler and alloys.

Problems with the boot catch after 2 years. I couldn't get it to close.a warning light appeared on the dashboard after 3 years to show that the abs was not functioning. the main dealer ran a thorough check and found a fuse had blown even though he said the abs was still working. however it cost me over ł80 to find this out. now a warning light on the dashboard has appeared to show the airbags are not functioning. I guess another fuse has blown?minor problems but rather irritating.. On a run on the motorways you can get 35 mpg but locally it is below 30mpg.

Generally been fantastic - during -10dc temperature the car wouldn't work.also the dpf light flashes when the car believes a service is due - causing confusion whether there is a problem with the dpf or if a service is due. I took my car for an oil change between services and the service mileage for the warning light was not reset - thus a service is not yet due but the car think it is. Manufacturers parts are expensive.

Mazda managed to produce a lot of car for the money in the 6 and i think the model raised the image ofthe company considerably. Performance issues linked to the dpf process can cause inconsistency with engine output and fuel consumption. Fuel consumption being consistently short of claimed increases running costs.

Reliability

KinyuKinr's Reliability ratings are based on our Driver Power survey of over 30,000 car owners. Ratings are the average for all owners of this car who responded. Individual owners’ ratings and comments appear below.

The Mazda 6 certainly does well in the style stakes, and it’s matching that with a solid ownership experience according to its debut appearance in Driver Power 2015.

Making it into the top 50 UK cars overall, 6 owners love its performance and handling, while reliability, build quality and seat comfort all score well too. It’s only real let down is its infotainment system, which owners find fiddly, and the sporty drive means it’s found a little wanting in the ride comfort department too.

Well it's certainly living up to the mazda and japanese quality. feels like it could last for a long time. the controls all work well as although not supposedly premium as an audi (which in my opinion is over rated anyway) they are solid and do what they should. my only reliability gripe is actually the cd player which skips a bit but the bose sound is superb. It's not the best fuel economy in the world. but it's not unexpected and I'd rather pay a little more at the pumps for petrol refinement, lower running costs and just nicer driveability. diesels I've owned in the past have always cost more to repair and service over time! people automatically think having a diesel makes motoring cheap. far from the truth!!

Very reliable but no more than I'd expect from a modern car. the tyre valve dust caps can sieze due to moisture which can lead to a tow in to a dealer as it shears off when you try to force it. no spare wheel! the front brake discs have juddered from nealy new and the dealer skimmed them under warranty which cured the defect for abot 5000 miles. currently I'm just living with the problem as theres no specific safety issue. The oil is mega expensive but I don't often top it up between services. the 18" alloys are prone to pot hole damage and I've done three in so far. fortunately quickfit can balance them up.

Everything works as described, this is the second mazda 6 sport I have purchased from new in 3 years. I had no problems with the first car in two years covering 40000 miles and it was for this reason why I purchased the present one. The first model, mazda 6 being heavy on tyres but I did travel over the pennines to work ( woodhead pass ). the goodyear tyres being on the soft side for grip hence they wore out quicker.

The car has run for 17000 miles without any mechanical problem and always started 1st time even in very cold conditions. the sensitivity of the automatic lights are slightly questionable. The fuel usage are in line with the advertised combined fuel consumption and the mixed type of mileage I am doing.my front low profile front tyres are due to be replaced the rear are fine.service cost at 12k miles was about ł216.

Car completely reliable to date, except for a wierd leak through the driver's door lining when the wind direction blew rain preumably down the window, through the seal, and inside the door ! has not recurred to date. I bought mazda's 3 yearservicing plan for ł700, so first annual service cost nothing extra. no other costs to date, and I've had the car from 3 months old and 2k miles.

Mechanically great car body work very poor (rust on roof especially the black ones) is also a pain. If you dont run hot every 400miles blocks up and has to be regenerated by a dealer wheels have a problem but mazda dont have a problem replacing them but they dont want to know about bodywork just blame stone chips it would have to be raining stones to cause such damage.

Initial problems had the car off the road for around 4 weeks when I bough it. sorry can't recall what it was but the part took ages to arrive and I was alerted to the problem through a warning light. 52 certainly isn't bad for the size of car but I would expect to do at least 10 mph better when I replace it. servicing isn't cheap - around ł300/time. depn about average?.

It has been very good other than intermittent problems with the one touch electric window on the drivers door and the passenger side door latch sticking. One button on a rear seat release disappeared, otherwise quality has been excellent, for a 2l auto the fuel economy is excellent and it has never failed to start or let me down mechanically.

No breakdowns or work required in 2 years owned, only minor quible is that occasionally the mpg indicated drops suddenly (from say 45mpg to 25) for a period then corrects itself - intermittant and no fault found by dealer. No parts have been required (other than service) so cant really judge but running costs appear good.

Currently has 16000 miles on the clock and have had only one part failure which was replaced under gurantee (touch button locking mechanism on driver's door). The last 5 cars I have had have been mazdas and they have never let me down even when there is over 150,000 miles on the clock. The car is superb and the only problem we have had with it was a faulty battery, which took longer than necessary to fix due to the poor customer service of the dealership, rather than because of any other issue. Note that although it was a franchised main dealer, it was the Rowes Honda dealership, not Mazda.

It is the 2nd mazda 6 diesel I have owned & up to yet not had any problems. Dpf issues keep raising oil levels to max allowable. 4000 mile oil changes because of this. this of course has to be paid for. dealer cannot rectify the issue and has also failed to rectify the drivers seat coming loose. Keep having to have oil changes because of dpf issues.
